Delightful You

Song of Solomon 5:16 – This is my beloved and this is my friend I walked into a Starbucks this morning in a bit of a rush. I had signed up for a webinar and I had a few moments to get my coffee and log on to my computer. My heart sank when I saw the long line at the counter.  Clearly, the webinar sans coffee was not an option.  In the busy Starbucks, I slipped around two young women that were slowly sauntering towards the counter.  I heard the sharp intake of breath and an indignant, “Well!” and knew immediately that they disapproved of my haste.  “No matter”, I told myself and got in the line, still anxiously watching the clock. The young women slipped...

Staying Married

Posted by on Sep 7, 2018 in Uncategorized | 54 comments

“Do you want to know how to stay married for a long time?”  Expectantly, I perched on the end of my chair as I watched the morning talk show host interview the author of a new marriage book.  (Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give, Ada Calhoun).  Who doesn’t want to know the secret to marriage longevity?  Because – for half the population – attaining it has proven to be quite a challenge.  In spite of high hopes and touching promises at the beginning of virtually every marriage, the odds of success are underwhelming.  The statistics indicate that there is a problem because somewhere around fifty percent of marriages end in divorce – Higher if it’s a...

Just Being

Not so long ago, I was in one part of the house while my husband was relaxing in his chair looking at something on his iPhone. Suddenly,  out of the corner of my eye,  I saw a spider racing up the wall.  I let out an involuntary scream followed by an urgent call to my husband, “Honey – You need to kill this spider”.   (I have made it clear that in our home – this is his job and his job alone).   My husband just sat there totally engrossed in reading.  With more urgency I demanded, “Honey, don’t just sit there.  You need to move quickly.  This spider is fast.” Don’t just sit there, do something…..Sometimes, I...

It’s raining but I’m thankful

It’s raining today (hard), taxes are due (argh!) and Werner has been out of town 1 day too long (sigh).   I thought it would be good to list the things that I’m thankful for. Running water (a missions team from our church, Werner included, has been going without for 3 days) A warm, comfortable home A car that has gas in it Starbucks and the comfort of a familiar, coffee-fragranced, relaxed environment Random text messages that make me smile from friends Chatting on the phone with my kids and getting caught up Extended family who really know you and still love you People who enthusiastically lend a hand Girlfriend-time scheduled on my calendar Living in one of the...

I recently came across a list of “10 Secrets About Your Pastor”.  It was great.  After reading it, I was somehow  compelled to write this one about pastor’s wives.  I know these are not true in every case, but I believe they are true much of the time.  I welcome your feedback.  Are you surprised?  Do you disagree?  Would you add any?  What about staff Pastor’s wives –  What would you add or take away? 12 Secrets About Pastor’s Wives We don’t always know whom to trust.  People have tried to get close to us for many reasons and some have betrayed us.  When we meet new people at church  we wonder whether they are safe, how...

Passive Aggressive No More

Posted by on Mar 1, 2012 in Uncategorized | 6,298 comments

I’m on a “Let’s-stamp-out-passive-aggressiveness ” kick.    Why can’t we just say what we mean, ask for what we want and be honest when we don’t want something?   Let me be the first to say that I resort to these “avoid the tension” tactics at times.  If you know me, you know that I am verbally more direct than most although I can do the “nice girl” thing with the best of the them.  I’m well trained – I was raised in church. OK – let’s back up.  What is passive aggressive behavior?  At the risk of over-simplifying the definition, it is appearing to go along with something outwardly,...
